Vin Diesel, Rupaul, Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx, Don Cheadle, Charlie Sheen, Matt Damon, Ben Stiller, Mark Rufallo, among many other Hollywood personalities, have already had their voices voiced by Jorge Lucas. “The fact of being an actor led me to a voice acting career. First and foremost, I am an actor with over thirty years of artistic career”, he says.
One of his most striking roles on TV was like Dr. Mauri, a soft-spoken doctor who took care of Antonio Fagundes’ character health, in the soap opera Bom Sucesso, that was considered a highlight of 2019 on TV Globo.
Recognized on the streets by the dubbing of protagonists of big box office films, Jorge points out that Vin Diesel’s films create immediate empathy with the audience. In fact, dubbing appeared in his life as a necessity. Son of lawyer parents, he opted for Arts University. Early on, Jorge realized he had a strong voice. “It was a chance to make money. The market for black actors is only beginning to improve. Thirty years ago, they only played gangsters, robbers, drug dealers and, sometimes, policemen and on the scene just said ‘Hi’ that’s all”, he recalls. Jorge Lucas is carioca from the neighborhood of Humaitá (south zone of Rio de Janeiro).
In 2020, Jorge faced another challenge: performing Amenemhat III, a pharaoh from the time of Abraham, in the soap opera Gênesis, on TV Record. “I look for the humanity in every character. As much as he is a biblical character, he is a human being”, says Jorge, who, since the 2000s, has been called upon to do several important works on television – A Lei do Amor, A Diarista, Casos e Casos, Força Tarefa, Pé na Jaca, Faça a sua História, Orgulho e Paixão, e Bom Sucesso. “That was when they started to associate my voice with an image”, he says.
Among the stages, the dubbing and the film set, Jorge chooses everything at the same time. “Art is my soul. There’s a lot in here. I have plenty to talk about and to express. I wouldn’t imagine myself, for example, having to work in a suit and tie on Avenida Paulista, unless the character requires it, of course!”
