Born in Varginha, in the state of Minas Gerais, Petrônio Gontijo started his work in the theatre as an amateur when he was still a child. Later, he decided to study at Unicamp, where he got his degree in Scenic Arts. As he took his classes at the university, he continued to dedicate time to the theatre and participated in several plays in many stages of the city of São Paulo.

He began working with TV by chance, when director Luís Fernando Carvalho went to the university where he was studying to test some students. At that time, Petrônio was invited by him to participate in the end-of-the-year special for the country duet Chitãozinho & Xororó, to interpret a kind of “Hick Romeo” under the direction of Luís Fernando.

This show was a kickoff for his TV career. Right after this work, he got invited for a test at Globo TV and soon after that he was playing a main role in the soap opera Salomé, by Sérgio Marques, directed by Herval Rossano. Since then, he has played many characters on TV, in the movies and in the theatre.

Although his career is based on the stages, he confesses that he enjoys doing TV very much and he wishes to do more movies. Every time he is asked about his preference among the three medias, the actor is categorical and says that he prefers whatever moves him artistically, despite the media.

For Petrônio, the actor is a kind of “filter” of the character. “No one is irreplaceable, but no one will play the character like you. This particular way of playing the character is what I call “filter”. The character is catalyzed by the interpreter; hence the need for the actor to always improve this “filter”, that is himself”, he explains.

For him, his works in Algo em Comum, Acorda, Brasil, Vidas Cruzadas, Pátria Minha e Luz do Sol have due meaning in his career with countless awards, that serve as an incentive. “The awards represent the acceptance of the restless being that I am”, he celebrates.
